The department for culture and education is responsible for cultural affairs. Its mission is to nurture contemporary art and culture, and to preserve the city’s cultural heritage. It’s the go-to agency for cultural subsidies, administers cultural awards, and manages Atelierhaus Salzamt. In addition to cultural funding, it’s also active in the role of impresario: Pflasterspektakel, the international street theater festival that annually attracts about 200,000 spectators, isorganized by a division of Kultur & Bildung, as are Linzfest and Festival 4020 for contemporary music. The division “Linz Kultur Projekte” is also the headquarters of Linz City of Peace and does the groundwork that goes into cultural strategy Formation.
